MH3 Video Diary

$ 74 Airbnb in Paris. During the Olympics.

The other day, I told someone I had just seen a lovely Airbnb in Paris for the Olympics, which was only $74 a night.

This sentence was in reply to their telling me the games are expensive. My pushback was simple. "You can still fly back to Paris for less than $ 1,200, get a room for a few hundred, take advantage of all the free activation zones and low-cost country houses and have an Olympic experience. I guarantee someone will offer you a free or inexpensive ticket to several events."

If you are skeptical, check out Airbnb's site, which is one of the IOC's most unique partners, and you will see many other options for $115, $167, or $285 per night! Places in good locations, places with good ratings, and places that were even cheaper when you measured them in USD, EUROS, Pounds Kronor, won, or yen. Many Parisians plan to be away for the entire games.

With the Olympics just a few weeks away, I want to dispel one of the most significant urban myths about them: they are expensive. That statement is both accurate and false; it all depends on when you ask the question and who you are.

The cost of attending the Olympics is a tricky exercise, comparable to a gymnast's floor routine, however I have an unscientific economic construct to share with you to explain the pricing scenario. Allow me to suggest three broad cohorts attend the Olympics. Cohort 1, we will call VIP. Cohort 2, we will call Super Fan. Cohort 3, we will call Undecided.

Cohort 1 consists of guests of sponsors, governments, federations, partners, and vendors. This group pays a premium price for everything and usually has it all confirmed some six to twelve months out. Their spending ensures they get the best seats, smooth transportation, and bookings at the right restaurants. Olympic hospitality is a massively complex and lucrative business if you do it right. In 2021, The IOC partnered with On Location for the next three Games to roll out a new model and ecosystem to centralize hospitality packages and create new revenue opportunities. That said, dozens of industry suppliers still build bespoke trips, tours, and events in collaboration with these partners. All are in service to Cohort 1, and their packaging, while great products for those who can afford them, adds to the perception of pricing extremes.

Cohort 2 consists of the Super Fans. I am going to lump both the veterans and the first-time Olympic-goers here. These people make attending the Olympics their hobby or are fulfilling a lifelong dream. They sign up for multiple community travel groups on social media, register with the office ticket platforms, and scout for flight and hotel deals. Often, they are willing to cue up (virtually) and pay face value to attend the sport, round, and venue of their choice, understanding they will save in other areas. Many savvy planners overbook on ticket orders, sometimes accommodation, and often with flight choices as early as possible to shape their trip as their Games trip comes into focus. This group knows the Games are an investment worth making and prioritizes organization and optimization of their time.

Cohort 3 is not just the undecided but also includes the hedgers. That is what I am. I learned the hard way from my first Olympics that while securing the prime tickets and accommodations you want early makes sense, the best deals are often available late. Very late. At each of the three Olympics and Paralympics I have attended, last-minute purchases have marked my trips, invites to events, and even unexpected extended stays. For Paris,  I booked hotels for my family and team a year ago as we knew we were running a conference during the Games. However, two weeks ago, I dumped my hotel for a fantastic three-bedroom, two-bathroom Airbnb that was less than half the price, in a better location, and capable of hosting as a unit. Now, we watch the weekly official Olympic drops (on Thursdays) for access to new tickets and other venues such as museums.

Traditional and social media is full of articles communicating that hotel and accommodation deals are appearing, and resale ticket sites, including the official Paris 24 app, have many products to gather. Before I dumped my Airbnb, I checked out all.com, the multi-brand booking site for the official hotel partner Accor. I went on again this morning and wanted to see how much it would cost per night to stay inside the Boulevard Périphiqué (periphery), often called the Périph. This ring road designates Paris's administrative limit. I wanted to see what was available during August 7-10, and there were dozens of hotels ranging from $ 150 to $ 400 a night. Again, all in Canadian dollars!

I understand that a trip that costs you a few thousand dollars isn't something everyone can undertake. My point today is to dispel the myth that you must spend tens of thousands of dollars per person to attend.

As a person who feels spoiled to attend three games and a Paralympics, I can attest that sports fan or not, there is nothing that matches the joy of cheering on your country, meeting people from every part of the Globe, and enjoying a world-class city strutting itself, is nothing short of amazing.

Global Sports Stage

Talking about how seemingly every sports property you can name is looking to build its global business sounds like an understatement.

As properties, rights holders, teams, and sponsors look for new growth areas, international expansion remains a prime strategy. While not necessarily a new strategy, it continues to become more challenging as North American leagues conduct regular season games in Asia, Europe, and South America, while international mega events such as the Olympics and FIFA World Cup are landing over the next few years.

Globally, women's sports are racing to new heights with sold football crows, the triumphant reemergence of professional ice hockey leagues, and pro basketball now having its moment on the heels of women's university basketball shaking up the collegiate landscape.

One of the critical lessons for all properties looking to grow internationally is collaboration. The NBA, WNBA, and USA Basketball have a unique approach to leveraging one another and bringing value to partners, players, and fans.

This unique key topic of discussion at SponsorshipX Paris will feature a unique plenary session on August 7th to provide some critical insights into this topic.

The session Global Growth: Strategies for Expanding Your Brand Internationally will explore essential strategies and insights to grow your brand's presence across international markets. Whether you're a startup looking to go global or an established business aiming to fortify your global footprint, this session offers practical guidance. Join Phil Cook, CMO, WNBA, and Julie Morris, SVP Commercial Development & Media, NBA, to learn about effective strategies for navigating global growth. Gain valuable insights into identifying lucrative international markets, leveraging strategic partnerships, and fostering innovation to amplify brand visibility and fan engagement globally. Don't miss this opportunity to equip yourself with actionable insights and best practices for achieving global brand growth.

SPX Paris Fam Trip

Are you ready for Paris?

Well, Paris is ready for you!I was in Paris the past few days for a final familiarization trip and lay witness as preparations are booming for the 2024 Olympics. From the beach volleyball courts at the feet of the Eiffel Tour to the exhibits from architecture to dents from twenty countries around the world to the buyouts of restaurants for hospitality venues and country houses.

I had a chance to check out accommodations, venues, restaurants and travel options for our conference attendees. While the city will be busy, the Metro, biking, and walking will make for an easy Olympics to navigate and take in.

I also strolled around the park and the community near Parc La Villette, which will be the Park of Nations for the Olympics, where many country houses, including France, the Netherlands, Slovakia and Canada, will be located. The park houses one of the largest concentrations of cultural venues in Paris, including the Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie (City of Science and Industry, Europe's largest science museum), three major concert venues, and the prestigious Conservatoire de Paris. Park of Nations will feature Canada Olympic House, where SponsorshipX Paris will host our plenary sessions each morning.

A significant part of my trip was checking out the locations for our fan experiences and activation tours. These afternoon sessions promise a unique opportunity for experiential learning and intimate relationship building with our passionate group of delegates looking to make international contacts and garner insights for their marketing projects.

Of course, capping off each evening with a networking dinner and some Paris nightlife won't be too shabby either!

SponsorshipX Paris will be a once-in-a-lifetime career opportunity for you to attend. Team SPX is ready. Paris is ready.

Are you ready?

The Future Begins with the Past

If you are going to have a conference about The Future of Global Partnerships set in the theatre of the Olympic Games, shouldn't you start with the longest-standing partner of the movement?

Coca-Cola's long-standing partnership with the Olympic Games began in 1928.

The initial involvement saw Coca-Cola selling bottles at the Amsterdam Games with minimal promotional signage. This relationship has evolved significantly, leading to the Paris 2024 Olympics; Coca-Cola's campaign platform is "Celebrate Everyday Greatness," which focuses on making any moment extraordinary.

The company's Olympic campaigns will also feature Powerade's updated "Pause is Power" platform, inspired by Simone Biles' focus on mental health. Costa Coffee, another Coca-Cola brand, will also open pop-up sites at distinct Paris locations. Coca-Cola will also sponsor the Torch Relay, a significant community event in France, featuring concerts and highlighting French history and values.

I am excited to hear about every drop of these campaigns when Brad Ross, Coca-Cola's VP of Global Arts & Entertainment Marketing, will join us on stage at SponsorshipX Paris.

Life Goes Full Circle

Andrew Greenlaw's career journey encapsulates the essence of a Brand Champion.

From his early days as a sponsorship manager for the 2007 Canada Games, he became Vice President of Sponsorship, Community, and Brand at CIBC.

His career highlights include critical roles in major projects like the 2010 Olympics' Red Mittens campaign and work with Lloyd's for the 2012 Olympics. A graduate of Laurentian University's SPAD program, Greenlaw's early attempts at sports marketing include a brief stint running a hockey card store in his parent's garage. His career includes significant contributions to community mobilization, exemplified by his work on the CIBC Run for the Cure and orchestration of torch relay campaigns.

Known for his humility, let's celebrate Andrew Greenlaw's achievements and ability to elevate those around him.

His upcoming fireside chat at the SponsorshipX Whistler event, focusing on Brand Champions, is highly anticipated as it reflects his legacy and forward-looking perspectives in the industry.

The Career Golden Rule

You don't get what you don't ask for.

That axiom holds in sales, relationships, and restaurants. It also holds for your career. I was reminded of this last week when I was having a coffee intro with the wife of a long-time colleague.

She had recently left the c-suite of a company she had helped sell and is looking for her next gig.

She has a three-legged stool of parameters for her next role. The parameters include the nature of the business being consumer-facing, the growth mindset of the people she works with, and the fact that marketing should be a business function, not a communications department. In short, she is taking control of her career.

She is making the ask.

When did you last ask for something from your company, manager, client, or yourself? A pitch to get on a new project. A request to learn new skills. An inquiry about the rotational role. A benefits rationale to take a course. A submission to join an industry body. A request of yourself to change a bad habit.

It is not the role of others to set the course for your career. To pick what mountains you are going to climb. To give you the equipment to do so.

It is not the role of others to set the course for your career. To pick what mountains you are going to climb. To give you the equipment to do so.

It is yours. Assuming you want something new in your career. Establish your criteria. Figure out the pitch. Assemble your data.

Make the ask.

Where Sport Gathers

Greetings from Birmingham.

I am enjoying the opportunity to attend Sport Accord this week in the West Midlands region of the UK. The slogan for the area is “One region, many worlds.”  That expression is an ideal metaphor for my trip.I made the trek here mainly to gather intelligence and connections for our upcoming forum at the Olympics – SponsorshipX Paris.

SportAccord’s World Sport & Business Summit is the ideal place to do it.

SportAccord is a global sports event organization based in the Olympic Capital, Lausanne, Switzerland, governed by stakeholders representing the Olympic and non-Olympic International Federations. It brings together international federations and organizations involved in sports business to serve, promote, and protect its stakeholders’ common interests, helping them achieve their global objectives and facilitating knowledge-sharing.The event features a mix of annual meetings, exhibitions, plenary sessions and workshops.

Like all significant events, the primary benefit is networking. One minute, you are chatting with the CEO of Sport Istanbul, and the next, you are reuniting with the event director for Crankworx Innsbruck. Each of them provides me with ideas to bring to our next event.

Best Trip to Halifax. Ever.

In an unforgettable journey to Halifax, MH3 experiences a trip that surpasses all previous visits.

As a JUNOS Board Member, he witnesses the 2024 JUNOS and MusicCounts teams, along with local committees and partners, bring the Canadian music industry to life in Halifax. The city transformed into a vibrant hub of musical celebration, where industry giants and fans connect in a unique, three-day festivity.

Hosting SponsorshipX's Future of Fandom event seamlessly integrates sessions and experiences across Halifax's waterfront, emphasizing the power of collaboration and the warmth of local hospitality. SponsorshipX Halifax showcased inspiring stories from new and longtime friends, like Bernadette from Osmow's entrepreneurial journey and Don from IMI's impactful message about live events in 2025. With a particular focus on partnerships, like the collaboration with ADVANCE Canada's Black Music Collective, and a nod to fan culture with a panel of superfans, SponsorshipX highlights the essence of fandom and community.

The weekend was a rich exploration of music, fandom, and unforgettable moments in Halifax.

Take a Look at The Future of Fandom

Diving into "The Future of Fandom," I get real about how fandom is not just for geeks and pop culture anymore—it's revolutionizing everything from classrooms to corner offices. After seeing the buzz at a fan event for *The Terror*, it hit me: this kind of passion can seriously shake things up, way beyond entertainment.

Take Gymshark as the perfect example—started in a garage and now it's a billion-dollar beast, all thanks to tapping into the power of community. That's the kind of story that gets me fired up. It shows that when you build a brand that people can rally behind, you're not just selling products; you're creating a movement.

Here's the deal: we need to start seeing everyone as fans, not just customers. Look at Taylor Swift and her Swifties—there's a connection there that's deeper than just music. It's about shared experiences, struggles, and triumphs. That's the kind of bond businesses should be aiming for.

And let's not sleep on the tech side of things—Web3 is changing the game by letting fans have a real say in what we do. It's about making them part of the journey, not just spectators.

So, here's my take: fandom is the future, and it's time we all started paying attention. It's not just about having fans; it's about being part of something bigger. And trust me, when you tap into that, the possibilities are endless.

The Truth Hearts – SXSW Style

In an enlightening panel at Soho House Austin, part of SPX Global's networking series, MH3 tackled the power of data in sponsorship success.

The conversation, inspired by a question on managing underperforming sponsorships, underscored the essence of embracing truth in marketing, aptly summarized as "Don't Be Afraid of Truth."

Experts Adam Grow of KORE and Harrison Kim of AUSTIN FC illustrated how data not only measures but predicts sponsorship returns, revolutionizing strategy alignment with corporate objectives. Key highlights included Austin FC's sustainability-focused partnership with YETI and the critical role of employee engagement and fan journey understanding in creating impactful sponsorships.

This session showcased the transformative potential of data in unveiling the value of overlooked properties and emphasized the importance of truth in sponsorship marketing’s future.

For a deeper dive into these insights and more, don’t miss the accompanying video, where MH3 brings these key takeaways to life.

Game Day Inspiration

MH3 was at Tim Hortons Field last week to get a boost of INSPIRATION for the SPX Academy!
The Grey Cup Festival team is in full planning mode. We are just two months away from this annual Canadian tradition that crowns the league champion and is a yearly gathering of Canadian marketers.

I had a great chat with marketers from FirstOntario Credit Union, who will have several team members in attendance at the SPX Academy and be on our agenda as an instructor - as we are calling our presenters. There is real magic in credit union and community partnerships, and FirstOntario is inspired to share its learnings.

It's Hammer Time!

The 2023 Grey Cup Festival, Built in The Hammer, will be unlike any you have ever seen.

MH3 has been to over twenty-five Grey Cups, so he speaks from authority. That's why he is so excited to share some of the highlights he anticipates this November.

The Ti-Cats & the Festival team have a game plan for everyone - families, football fanatics, fitness lovers, and fun seekers.

Time to work on your game!

SponsorshipX Whistler Here I Come!

I am so excited to be taking SponsorshipX back to Whistler for the fourth time—such a magical setting.

Our host event partner, Crankworx, is like nothing you have seen before. It is a festival that demonstrates the most profound meaning of consumer passion. Action and competition demonstrate the true importance of camaraderie. Side events and activations that demonstrate the true sense of engagement.

The best part of our event is always the people. Hosting SponsorshipX in Whistler, Nashville, or Montpellier has always been about Building Community to me.

If you are coming to Whistler, I can't wait for you to embrace it.

If you can't make it to Whistler this week, don't worry, we have more magical events to share!

I a thrilled to announce some exciting news from the world of sponsorships! MH3 Countdown to SponsorshipX

Crankworx?

I will confess that when Maja from what was then called Whistler Blackcomb and Darren from Crankworx first pitched me on bringing hosting our conference during their mountain biking festival, I was skeptical.

Thankfully they were astute enough to do what most great properties do, and that was to host me at an event so I could experience the community firsthand. Immediately I was hooked. No Kool-Aid was required.

If you haven’t been to Crankworx, I will share my thoughts and attempt to create some magic with you. But I know I will fail. Crankworx is a tough story to write. It isn’t easy to paint.

You must see Crankworx in person, to believe it.

MH3 Countdown to SponsorshipX

I am working on my opening presentation, "Scaling Mountains," for SponsorshipX Whistler, and I need your help.

I need some inspiration, stories, advice, and kindling to fire up my thoughts and words. What mountains are you climbing right now? What mountains do you feel looming? What's the best advice you have received for scaling mountains in your lifetime?

Feel free to DM me, message me, call me, mail me your input. I love crowdsourcing an idea!

Please join me at SponsorshipX Whistler on July 28th - Presented by the Pacific National Exhibition, as I kick things off for an amazing day at SponsorshipX Whistler.

Paris 2024 – Renaissance of the Fan

The pandemic taught us that sport is not without fans in the stands. Live crowds bring the energy, emotion, and home team advantage that no technology we currently have in our grasp can do. The 2024 Paris Olympic Games will be the first time since 2018 that international fans will join local supporters to pack stadiums, destinations, hotels, and cafes.

Can you believe it?

In addition, the opportunity for friends and family to cheer loved ones will be a fantastic reboot. Nearly 70% of athletes only compete in one Olympics. Hence many of 2020(1) and 2022 participants lost the opportunity to share the moment in real life with their closest supporters.

Cassie is heading from Ketchum, Idaho, to Whistler, British Columbia, for her first ever Crankworx to be a panellist at SponsorshipX Whistler, showcase her apparel brand Wild Rye, and enjoy all the mountains. East Coast Music Awards Recap

MH3 spent last weekend in Halifax at the East Coast Music Awards, and the number one refrain was how great it was to be back in-person making connections.

The East Coast Music Awards combine a festival, a conference, an award show and a music industry marketplace. The weekend was a powerful reminder of the value of meeting in person. Hear more of MH3's thoughts about the ECMA's.

Not only will they continue to work together, but SPX will also be the official Day presenter of July 28 at SponsorshipX Whistler. This renewal is fantastic news for both the PNE and SPX, and it's a true testament to the power of collaboration and creativity regarding sponsorships.

As the founder of SponsorshipX, it brings me great joy to see such exciting developments in the sponsorship world. These are precisely the kinds of innovative and impactful initiatives that can help companies build stronger relationships with their audiences while creating unforgettable experiences that leave lasting impressions. I can't wait to see what the future holds for the PNE, SPX, and other incredible partners, redefining what it means to be a sponsor in today's fast-paced and ever-evolving world.

Building Community

We are Building Community. That is the purpose, mission, vision, and north star of what SponsorshipX is all about. But sometimes I forget that.

Sometimes I get caught up in my head and over-complicate the magic of what SPX is all about. As much as I like to talk about it, we are here to Inspire, Educate, and Connect, and yes, we do all that; what we do more than anything is try to bring people together in a way that celebrates our industry.

Everyone Sells According to Steve

SponsorshipX Whistler will feature a BD Masterclass from Steve Tseng!

Steve Tseng of the PAC-12 will be on stage at SponsorshipX Whistler to share his story on how he turned around the conference's commercial business and his thoughts on the challenges facing partnership salespeople.
