The World’s #1 World Cup City is a Force of Nature
“Force of Nature”
It seems every day, Vancouver is getting closer to proving out its official FIFA World Cup slogan.
I am in town this week for some of our son’s graduation from UBC and am squeezing in a few SponsorshipX prep meetings and feeling it on the ground. Industry media is also feeling it.
\Just last Friday, a study by the Action Network ranked Vancouver the number one FIFA World Cup 2026 host city on the planet, scoring 82.2 out of 100. After analyzing all sixteen host cities across Canada, the United States and Mexico on accessibility, cost, atmosphere, safety, weather and hotel access. Vancouver finished nearly 20 points ahead of runner-up Toronto, and almost 25 clear of Seattle.
“Vancouver stands out because it combines a highly walkable stadium area, strong nearby hotel access and a smoother matchday setup than any other 2026 host city in the index.” — Action Network, via Curiocity Vancouver — May 22, 2026
Vancouver is leveraging both its natural advantages and its commercial prowess. The natural advantages are its geography as the only host city in the 2026 tournament, where you can see mountains from almost every angle, be next to (or in) the ocean one minute and reach a coastal rainforest by the time most cities would get you to a parking lot.
The slogan "Force of Nature" is also a business statement, as the sponsors, the organizing committee, and the multiple levels of government partners are all in.
“This is about creating a globally iconic image that immediately connects Vancouver to the FIFA World Cup and showcases our city’s creativity and ambition. The transformation of Science World is more than a visual transformation — it is an investment in telling British Columbia’s global story.” — Royce Chwin, President & CEO, Destination Vancouver FIFA.com / inside.fifa.com, May 6, 2026
Inside the dome, Science World is hosting the North American premiere of Soccer & Technology from the FIFA Museum, a travelling exhibition from FIFA’s museum in Zurich that takes visitors from the pitch to the broadcast studio, exploring the technologies shaping modern football. It also features objects linked to Canada’s international football history. It runs from May 15 through September 7, extending the commercial window for partners and the city’s profile well beyond the final whistle.
FIFA confirmed that every global partnership tier for 2026 has been sold out, making it the most commercially successful tournament in the federation’s history. Many of these partners and more will be activating at the FIFA Fan Festival, which finds its home at the historic PNE grounds in Hastings Park, featuring a brand-new 10,000-capacity amphitheatre as its centrepiece, with 6,000 covered seats and 4,000 open-air. Daily site capacity is 25,000. The festival runs June 11 to July 19 with free general admission, live match broadcasts across 70+ games, over 60 free live performances at the Park Stage, and a ticketed amphitheatre concert series headlined by Flo Rida, Simple Plan and Arkells. The companies that have been contracted to produce the festival - Brand Live Management Group and Inventa- bring decades of major event experiential chops to the table.
In addition to the official FIFA activations, Canada Soccer is knee-deep with its partners, headlined by the Uber Eats Canada Soccer House in North Vancouver at The Shipyards. This will be the official fan home for Canada Soccer in Vancouver during the tournament. Free entry. Athlete meet-and greets. Fan programming, interactive games, prizes. A world-class waterfront setting with the mountains behind it.
“Whether fans are gathering at Canada Soccer House North Vancouver, heading to the stadium, or cheering from their couch, Uber will be there to help make every matchday more seamless, more social, and more memorable.” — Lola Kassim, General Manager, Uber Eats Canada Canada Soccer press release, April 1, 2026
The Shipyards is one of Metro Vancouver’s most photographed public spaces —with a mountain backdrop, waterfront, and accessible by SeaBus. Uber Eats gets its brand planted at a free, open fan hub with city-wide reach. Michelob ULTRA gets poured at every Canada match screening.
Coca-Cola is a global FIFA partner and a Vancouver Host Partner. They have secured prime real estate, steps from BC Place on West Georgia Street. The Shark Club Vancouver, the most storied sports bar, will become Canada House by Coca-Cola for the summer. Beginning in May, the venue underwent a full Coca-Cola transformation: bold Canada-themed décor inside and out, new staff uniforms, a World Cup-exclusive poutine burger, and activations running all summer long.
The Coca-Cola World Cup Trophy Tour stopped at the Shark Club in April. Brazil’s Roque Júnior was among the football legends who visited. Partners Smirnoff and Michelob Ultra complete the matchday lineup.
“This summer, Shark Club is going all-in. Canada House by Coca-Cola will be the home base for fans who want to experience every match with an unmatched atmosphere, exciting activations, and a community that knows how to cheer.” — Murray Saunders, General Manager, Shark Club Vancouver GlobeNewswire / Shark Club, April 23, 2026
From June 6 to July 19, Capilano Suspension Bridge Park is hosting Canyon Kick-Off. With this immersive soccer-themed experience, country flags representing all eight nations competing in Vancouver are suspended beneath the iconic bridge alongside a giant 10-foot soccer ball. Foosball, soccer cornhole, photo installations and the Cliff House Restaurant’s globally inspired menu celebrating the cuisines of all eight competing nations round out the experience. It’s an independent activation, a world-class tourist attraction leveraging its strengths.
TSN and CTV hold every Canadian broadcast right for all 104 matches. TSN’s SportsCentre: Road to 2026 has been building toward this summer for months. They will make Vancouver their FIFA home for the tournament, with a planned SportsCentre setup at Jack Poole Plaza. Canada’s matches are expected to draw some of the largest television audiences in Canadian sports history.
There is good news and bad news for those travelling to Vancouver. The bad news is that if you booked a year ago, you may have overpaid for your hotel. The good news is that between 70 and 80 percent of FIFA’s pre-committed hotel bookings—roughly 15,000 room nights have been released back into general inventory, according to the B.C. Hotel Association. While prices haven't dropped yet, according to official data, Destination Vancouver has confirmed that June hotel bookings are currently down 20 percent compared to the same period in 2025. My personal data says they have dropped, as I upgraded my June hotel choice last week and saved significant dollars at a much better address.
Airbnb has announced that the FIFA World Cup 2026 will be the company's largest hosting event to date, surpassing the 2024 Paris Olympics. Prime Downtown Vancouver rates are still under $500 per night for a June 16-19 booking, in case you wanted to attend a certain SponsorshipX conference!
Vancouver has done this before. Their learnings from the 2010 Olympics & Paralympics are being put to good use. They didn’t treat this as an event; they treated it as a commercial strategy briefing. From the Fritos in the corner store to the redesigned Science World, the city is on display.
